Boat's Ego Booster & Almightifier

Since the word spread about the Gran Giah Supa Spinta, I got a new request to build another custom booster from an acquianted guitarist. He's called Boat and plays in the terrific funk band M O N K.

Baptized 'Boat's Ego Booster & Almightifier', this is another incarnation of Jack Orman's fantastic Minibooster with tone circuit. Cutting out all the crap, I assembled the below lo res video, which shows the initial steps of building a stompbox from scratch: pcb board is transferred, etched and populated and the enclosure is etched.

And I tell you time and time again: whatever you want Google is your friend. I found the basic illustration through a simple image search 'boat monk almighty' or something:

So without further ado:

part I of the video: making the pcb and enclosure

Part two of the video is here: assembly and finshing

I will have to stop overdoing the etching. Aluminium etching really needs no time at all. You can see the etchant ate through the toner mask ever so slighty.

This is after drilling pot and switch holes and trying the switch. It was a first tryout on how the box would look.

After having sanded off the black paint with which I initally filled the etched out areas, I dipped green automotive paint on the leaves and bottom palm like branches. I used this technique on the Spinta as well. Just because it was filled with black before, the green seemed to dissapear. Now the effect is a tad magical as the green shines through with the right light. The grain on the drawing could have been better, I admit, also on the font. Using standard high quality fonts that come with word helps but limits creativity a bit. Then again then box is looked at mostly from almost 2 m up, so, ...er

Here's a gut shot:

Because I encountered popping LED problems with Giah's booster, I applied this terrific circuit by Jack Orman to avoid this, below you can see the polarized cap and first resistor. The second is hidden in tape.

I did have the intellingence to put a thick coat of clear shiny laquer this time. Save the layout from unavoidable wear.
